" Paris trough Imogen's Lense"

Imogen Morris Clarke is with NEXT (NY). x

IMOGEN: I love Paris. When I went there last October for the final fashion week, the dismal weather and my constant yearning for home made it impossible for me to enjoy myself and my surroundings. i saw it not as a culturally diverse and fashion forward capital, but as a stonewashed, slightly prettier and equally rainy version of London! However, every time since then I have grown increasingly fond of this picturesque capital, and the couture week affirmed that I had finally fallen for the romantic yet cosmopolitan allure of the city.

Additionally, a few days before coming to Paris, I bought a digital camera. i know nothing about taking pictures, but I had wanted a camera for a while after always being on the other side of the lens! I thought it would be a great chance to record my visits and widen my knowledge.

These pictures are a few I took of couture week in Paris; backstage, after shows, and just messing around. I had such a fun time recording my stay and loved that all my friends were happy to pose for my pictures; beautiful people in a quintessentially beautiful city.

Me, Nimue Smit, and Katie Fogarty outside the Paris Opera. We had an evening off after fittings and castings and decided to meet up and go for dinner and ice cream.

We stopped off at Haagen Daas (my favorite is the praline biscuit flavor.)

I went to that same Haagen Daas later in the week with Hanne and Skye (Stracke)!

This is Mathilde (Frachon) dancing in the street. She is wearing a helmet because her boyfriend has a motorbike. One afternoon, we rode on the bikes to a cafe near the Champs-Élysées. I felt so French, riding through the city at top speed, but am secretly quite scared of motorbikes!! ;)

This was just a boy sitting by a fountain in Hotel De Ville. I liked the way his hair contrasted with the pigeons near him, so I took a picture and ran away.

Hanne (Gabby Odiele) at the Alexandre et Mathieu show.

I took this when Hanna (Rundlof) was talking to a friend....

Backstage at Chanel. The food is to die for!! Possibly the highlight of my week. And I really love pain au raisins.

This is Hanne (Gaby Odiele) and Toni (Garrn) eating 'Barbe Papa' (candy floss.) We went to the fair at Tuileries for Toni's birthday and had so much fun. We were running around like little kids, and eventually ran out of money - so we just begged to be let on free and got a bunch of free snacks too!

Me and Hanne on the caterpillar ride. Possibly the least scary ride of the whole park, but it was just us on the rollercoaster, so we went really overboard ; screaming and cheering until the poor attendants had to throw us off!

The hotel Grand Wailea in Maui. Or once my sisters, dad and I stayed in a hotel in San Diego that is suposed to be one of the top ten most haunted hotels in the world, I can't remember what it was called but it was pretty cool in a creepy way..hahaha

PONY RYDER: Kelsey, do you swim or do you prefer just laying and enjoying the sun?
KELSEY VAN MOOK: Well in the summer I go to my cabin with my family. Everyone just hangs out on the beach and on the docks, then when you get too hot just jump into the lake to cool off. It's so much nicer to swim in a lake rather then a swimming pool !

POY RYDER: How about summer sports?
KELSEY VAN MOOK: My sister and I always play tennis in the summer. Its not like we are good at it...actually we are pretty bad at it, but it's fun

PONY RYDER: What SPF do you use?

... Paris

STEPHANIE CARTA: Sooo despite couture going stinky, on the upside, I still got to visit Paris for a week, see my agency and do go sees with good clients to me. A couple of my friends were around too, like Hanne and Daul. Daul gave me some extra insider info on some spots to visit too, as she now is living there and has become a local too.

Paris… it was so nice to be there again and have him (Jay) there with me...I really love it and realized how comfortable, free and inspired I feel there....

Besides going around to castings, I visited some of my favorite spots and some new ones... We didn’t go too crazy, as the Euro is pretty strong right now… haha... but it was so nice even just to be immersed in the culture, environment and way of life that Paris involves...
I like the way you can just walk or ride around everywhere and how beautiful and clean everything is.

ph. Jay

Spots & Shops

STEPHANIE CARTA: One of our first night spots was Montana in St. Germaine, and it was so funny I saw my friend who used to work in Balenciaga studio there straight away. Went to a Colette party on one of the last nights, and ate at some favorite places around…

Also walked through Palais Royale for the first time (Rick Owens) and checked out some boutiques and vintage in the Marais area. Had a look in Balenciaga while I was in the 8th area and caught a glimpse of some really cool creased skinny black pants that, of course, were not in the sale section haha. Missed out on visiting the markets, but still managed to come back with a few vintage pieces (how could I resist)

PONY RYDER: Vintage shopping in Marais? Any recommendations?
The vintage - I got to stop by quickly at Freep'star in the Marais, which in my opinion used to be a lot better, but it’s the only thing I got a chance to see, as I had forgotten the name of the favorite store I used to visit! My friend just reminded me it’s called I think Guerrisol..?!

At the moment I’m/were really into hats and sunnies, we just got some cool vintage Linda Farrows and circle Ray Bans in NYC... and my favorite hat is one Jay got from Mexico, and a robber style y3 tight stretchy beanie thing

Ph. Jay

Food & Vine

PONY RYDER: Carts, when you are in Paris, do you mostly choose French cuisine?
STEPHANIE CARTA: When I was in Paris I did make sure I tried some French, although it’s not my favorite... the whole time I was actually craving a homemade Thai spicy stir fry... that’s my forte.. Which now I can make haha.. But I made sure to stop by Robert et Louise where my favorite steak was last time, however this time it was the French specialty of snails that my boyfriend ordered which tasted the best...

PONY RYDER: Recommend us some places!

STEPHANIE CARTA: I had to revisit cafe Charlotte for a cocktail, and show my boy the interior, which we realized the same guy who does some good ones here in NYC, has done (Balthazar, and Pastis).
Also we tried a couple of new places, one really good Italian recommended to us called La Briciola in the Marais, and some Japanese ramen, I think in the 2nd eme..

For breakfasts I would go out and buy fresh fruit (SO good in Paris) and pastries and coffee...

Lunches were usually things on the go from around where I was casting, such as salads etc, and dinners usually with some nice French wine all around the place!

Ph. Jay

Night Life

PONY RYDER: Where did you enjoy your time the most without spending a penny?
: I enjoyed most of my time without spending a penny… I was just walking the streets with my boy, enjoying the late sunshine and nice weather, and us documenting all the beauty with the Leica! Looking at all the beautiful store displays and scenery...

PONY RYDER: Do you get any benefits in clubs as a model?
I don’t usually partake in "model club benefits" but I know there is a lot of that going on... usually I end up in a lot of nice places because of the friends I hang out with, who know the city’s spots :)

PONY RYDER: Which clubs do you usually visit in Paris?
I don’t usually like clubbing, but I have ended up on some favorite places, Le Baron and Montana to name a couple as standard French procedure haha

Ph. Jay

Face & Body

PONY RYDER: What about health and fitness clubs?

STEPHANIE CARTA: As for health and fitness clubs... the walking and metro stairs usually do enough for me... when I lived in Paris I used to visit Bikram Yoga.. I love yoga… but it’s not so much a necessity or way of culture there, so much as it is in say Australia or America...

PONY RYDER: France is famous for great cosmetics. What are your favorite French brands?

STEPHANIE CARTA: I had to pick up some Nuxe face, body and hair oil while I was there!!! The Parisian pharmacies are amazing, full of so many basic original products... Avene face cleanser I use as back up and the Crealine for makeup removal is a good staple too... other than that I didn’t really indulge too much as I don’t really wear makeup too often at the moment… and I’m still on my Christine Chin and organic products from here in NYC...

PONY RYDER: What are your favorite French fashion magazines and photographers?

STEPHANIE CARTA: French Vogue...purple... Numero... Cedric Buchet to name a couple...

TONI GARRN: the interview

Posted on: 2009/07/15

ph. Mario Testino for Hugo Boss

Toni Garrn is with MODELWERK (Germany), Women and Storm (London).

Steven Meisel for Vogue Italia November 2008

PONY RYDER: Do your friends call you Antonia, or Toni?

TONI GARRN: Everyone except for my family calls me Toni.. My friends actually started that name, so I kept it for modeling.

Can Evgin

PONY RYDER: You rose to prominence rather quickly, almost immediately after getting discovered, which is a rare success! You mother agency has been exceptionally good at building your career. Did you rely a lot on your agency, or did you push yourself to the maximum at that time?

TONI GARRN: No, I had no idea what to expect and because I am still in school, I relied on what my agency told me...

PONY RYDER: Fashion weeks in February or in September. Is there a big difference, in terms of production, castings…?
TONI GARRN: No, it’s pretty much all the same, only the clothes are different because of the season.

Valentino Couture @ via TFS (Marcel)

PONY RYDER: When you walk, do you ever notice who's sitting in the first row? Have you made eye contact with your favorite celebrity?
TONI GARRN: No, never! Lots of girls after the show or in between looks mention who is sitting where but I never look at the audience...I somehow can't concentrate if I don't look straight ahead.
Except for when the finale goes extremely slowly, I dare some sidelooks...

Harve Leger by Max Azria via

PONY RYDER: Music on the runways! Do you know what type of music will be playing at the show? Is it easier walking to a song you already know, or a piece of music you've never heard before?
TONI GARRN: Music is very important! If it has a good beat or is just beautiful, known or just a fun song, walking on the runway is so much fun…

Especially at the opening of the show, when the lights are on, and a great song starts…

But the first girl doesn't really set the pace, ‘cause until the third girl everyone does their own pace.
If I don't like the music I feel kind of lost on the runway...

PONY RYDER: During fashion weeks models get booked to do several shows each day! How do you rush from one show to another?
TONI GARRN: I always prefer walking or taking the subway to’s always hard to find the driver again and sitting in a car depresses me after a while…

Greg Kadel for Vogue Germany

PONY RYDER: How do hair stylists manage to make great hairdos to a model who's had a different hairstyle just a few hours earlier?

TONI GARRN: The hair people are amazing and they know exactly how to change a look to another one … Sometimes, if there's nothing to be saved, because the hair is all greasy and it has to be dry e.g., it has to be washed, but that's not often the case.

Fabien Baron for Calvin Klein

PONY RYDER: Do you remember your first casting? What was it like?

TONI GARRN: What I remember from my first showseason is that I once, by accident, took the casting dress home that was meant to be the dress for all girls... I got really nervous but brought it back immediately when I realized…

Knoepfel & Indlekofer for Vogue Germany

PONY RYDER: Castings must be exhausting. What gives you energy?

TONI GARRN: I hate coffee soo much, but don't really like tea or other warm beverages either..
I like cola but enough sleep is enough to keep me going

Versence Fragrance by Versace PH. Michelangelo di Battista

PONY RYDER: Toni, so many covers, so many editorials. Which picture or a cover of yourself is your favorite?

TONI GARRN: Oh that's a hard one...don't have one particular picture or story cause every shoot has its special features that make the images beautiful in its own way...
But one of my favorite stories was the Italian Vogue with Kathrin and Meisel or the Versace fragrance by Battista.

PONY RYDER: And what about your parents. What modeling job were your parents most proud of? What kind of photos do they like the most?

TONI GARRN: My dad doesn't really recognize me in pictures so he can't pay attention to what's going on… But my mom knows exactly what job I do and when..I think her favorite story was the german vogue one with Karl Lagerfeld and Siri... my grandma adores those images a lot as well.

PONY RYDER: You are the face of Shiseido Cle de Peau. Before doing the shoot for the cosmetics campaign, did you have a special beauty treatment for the skin and hair?TONI GARRN: No, no special beauty treatment!

PONY RYDER: Where do you go for your “regular” treatment?

TONI GARRN: If I have time I go to Adam&Eve in Hamburg

Steven Meisel for Vogue Italia
PONY RYDER: You were a cover girl of Vogue Italia, with one more German belle: Kathrin Thormann. At what location was it?

TONI GARRN: It was near LA on Malibu Beach

PONY RYDER: How do models manage to co-ordinate their poses in shoots with other models?
TONI GARRN: It's not harder working with another model, just more fun!

Steven Meisel for CK Jeans
PONY RYDER: Is it easier to work on a campaign as one of the models, in a group as in CK jeans, or as the only model, for example Calvin Klein collection?

TONI GARRN: No, it's definitely more work when you're alone..and it's also more fun hanging around with all the girls while waiting.

PONY RYDER: We see you a lot backstage with model star Ali Stephens. How did your friendship start?

It started when we did the Calvin exclusive 2 seasons ago...We had so much fun hanging around while doing looks...but she's not only one of my best friends but I think she's also one of the most beautiful girls! We should work together more often..
Mikael Jansson for Chloe

PONY RYDER: You are the star of Chloe ad campaign among others, along side model star Anna Jagodzinska. Do you make a bond or start a friendship when you're working with other models?
TONI GARRN: Yes, normally yes..but that case was different because Anna and I were good friends before the shoot.
Felix Lammers for Tush Magazine

PONY RYDER: How would you describe your look?
TONI GARRN: I wear whatever is comfortable especially at school..I can't really describe my style but I do dress up a little at work

PONY RYDER: Which jeans that you own are your favorite ones?
TONI GARRN:..I have a great pair of Diesel jeans..but I also love my Acne and Cheap Mondays

PONY RYDER: Your favorite store for shopping clothes?
TONI GARRN: I try to only go shopping in ny cause everything I buy in Hamburg I regret as soon as I get to NY..but, if I do, I love Zara

Karl Lagerfeld for FENDI
PONY RYDER: What's your favorite fashion item that you own?
TONI GARRN: Mh...I guess my Chanel bag

PONY RYDER: You also worked with Karl Lagerlefeld on Fendi Ad Campaign. Did he also style the campaign?
TONI GARRN: No, he didn't

Greg Kadel for Vogue Germany

PONY RYDER: Do you have a special diet and exercise plan?
TONI GARRN: No, not at all..I eat whatever I like..but I play tennis and run nearly every day

Modelwerk blog via TFS

PONY RYDER: Do you ever skip breakfast?
TONI GARRN: No never! I love breakfast,to me it s the most important meal… I sometimes by accident skip dinner or lunch.

PONY RYDER: At which place did you have the best meal while you were in NY?
TONI GARRN: Oh, there's so many places...breakfast at Le Pain or all pizza and sushi places

PONY RYDER: What is your favorite place in New York?
TONI GARRN: Haven't really had free time to spend but I like union square a lot, 'cause that's where the apartment is.
ph: Daniel Jackson

PONY RYDER: What products do you use for your hair?
TONI GARRN: Doesn't matter..whatever my mother gets me as I live at home

PONY RYDER: Which hairstylist takes care of your hair?
TONI GARRN: In Hamburg I go to NOON

PONY RYDER: What products do you use for maintaining your skin?
TONI GARRN: take off makeup especially during fashionweek I can only use Bioderma Crealine but I don't really have an everyday cleanser

PONY RYDER: So your choice of make up remover....
TONI GARRN: Bioderma and Chanel eye makeup remover

PONY RYDER: Your choice of sun block?
TONI GARRN: La Roche posay 50 stick
