What do MODELS do?
x
x
CAMERON RUSSELL: I try to consume as few materials as I can: rags instead of paper towels, buying used clothing, not driving when subway/walking/biking is an option, turning off lights, etc. Of course, I fly everywhere for my job so I'm not doing a very good job on that front.
x
x
RACHEL ALEXANDER: The main thing I can say is that I don’t own a car. I take the subway and walk around NY. I also live in a small apartment. In the city that doesn't take up much space. I eat mostly vegetarian and raw foods. There's a lot in the East Village where I live.
x
x
DOROTHEA BARTH JÖRGENSEN: I try to be aware of the environment, I eat vegetarian food, and if it’s possible I buy organic ! And I also avoid buying takeaway food! Then I buy a lot of second hand clothes! Recycling!

Michelle Westgeest is with TRUMP (NY) & Future Faces (Holland)

Ph. David Bellemere

The Interview

PONY RYDER: How did you start modeling Michelle?

MICHELLE WESTGEEST: I was always interested in fashion and magazines before even knowing I could be a model as well! They scouted me when I was 15 but my mom didn't allow me.... Then few years later again, when shopping in London!

dossierjournal.com via TFS (fadedcolours)

PONY RYDER: What are your agencies...

MICHELLE WESTGEEST: D-management (Milan), City models (Paris), Trump models (New York) & Future Faces (Holland).

PONY RYDER: Is there a different treatment of models and their careers in a smaller boutique agency, as opposed to big agencies and networks?
MICHELLE WESTGEEST: For me yes. I prefer smaller, it’s really personal and not like; so am I speaking to Michelle V, W or S? Though the most important is how you like your booker: the click you have...

Christian Dior SS 10 via TFS (SirSunday)

PONY RYDER: When models first appear on the scene, they are sometimes compared to established models. Were you compared to anyone?

MICHELLE WESTGEEST: I’ve been compared to Eva Herzigova.

Dolce & Gabbana S/S 10 Milan via TFS (Nils)

PONY RYDER: Do you see yourself as a commercial, editorial or runway model?

MICHELLE WESTGEEST: Runway, I like doing it and then I'm 181! And editorial; I like playing different moods and the shootings are cooler and more arty then commercial!

PONY RYDER: So you are 181cm tall. How was growing up? Where you the tallest in your class?

MICHELLE WESTGEEST: Yess, well one of the tallest! But then Dutch people are the tallest in the world!! So didn’t stand out that much.

D-management

PONY RYDER: Is posing for polaroids different then posing for editorials.
MICHELLE WESTGEEST: It depends… sometimes they ask for some cool posing, but mostly it's just straight and natural.

PONY RYDER: I wonder, do you notice the difference in the way you pose now, and the way you used to at the very beginning of your career?
MICHELLE WESTGEEST: Hm... I learned to 'feel' the move I make. To give something extra in the picture (with eyes) and energy is important! And I try to understand the story they do, what mood/feeling it is.

Dior Couture 09 via TFS (Fahion_Girl22) @ fashionmag.com

The Shows

PONY RYDER: You booked some coveted runway jobs, like for example Christian Dior, Giorgio Armani, Hussein Chalayan... What was your favorite job among this three?

MICHELLE WESTGEEST: I was so happy to do all of these shows! All have they're own style. The Dior show is the strong and sexy feeling! I think it’s every models dream to do this show… Giorgio Armani’s very elegant. And Chalayan amazing fabrics! It was a very original show.

Christian Dior FW 09 via TFS (SirSunday)

PONY RYDER: How long did the process of putting make up on for Dior show last? MICHELLE WESTGEEST: Hm, 40 minutes more or less...

PONY RYDER: Is 40 minutes the usual time for makeup process prior fashion shows?

MICHELLE WESTGEEST: Hm usually shorter, 15/ 20 min... The look is more natural then. But creating this artistic look and bleaching eyebrows makes it take longer.

city-models.com

PONY RYDER: Can you recommend us some designer that you like that the public is not very familiar with?

MICHELLE WESTGEEST: There was a great designer in Holland; Percy. The most beautiful clothes… especially dresses he made. Unfortunately, last year he passed away...

STYLE & SHOPPING

x

PONY RYDER: Gianfranco Ferre campaign! Tell us, what did you like the most about GF clothes?
MICHELLE WESTGEEST: The pallet. The collection had a lot of beige, greyish white and black. It’s what I always wear myself too!!

PONY RYDER: Where do you shop for your clothes?
MICHELLE WESTGEEST: Hm it depends on the city I’m in! In NY there’s Urban Outfitters, Bloomingdales for example. They always have something nice at Zara, H&M. And in Paris many nice small shops, especially the Marais, cool vintage stuff that not everyone has ;)!

X

BEAUTY ROUTINE

X

PONY RYDER: What is your beauty routine?
MICHELLE WESTGEEST: Always before touching my face put on some antibacterial stuff on my hands! Then some cleansing milk, go with a towel over my face. Then almond Weleda cream.

PONY RYDER: Do you use under eye cream?
MICHELLE WESTGEEST: Haha I’m getting old?! No not special eye cream.. Just my Weleda that I use all over the face and under my eyes ;)

BEAUTY SECRET

X

PONY RYDER: What is the best beauty advice you know of?

MICHELLE WESTGEEST: A massage when you are tired and had much tension - feel like reborn. If it’s done right. For the face, a good scrub and of course; drinking a lot of water!

D-model management

PONY RYDER: What products do you use for nourishing your body?
MICHELLE WESTGEEST: Nivea body cream - hydrating and I like the smell

PONY RYDER: OK, so what's your favorite fragrance?
MICHELLE WESTGEEST: I use to wear Pure – Jill Sander. But now, don’t really have any..

SHAPE & DIET

X

PONY RYDER: How do you stay in shape?

MICHELLE WESTGEEST: By doing exercises. And jump, run... The more tiring the better the result is the heavy truth! Not saying I’m doing this every day… then with castings you walk a lot of course. Then to drink a lot of water and sort of eat a bit of everything!

PONY RYDER: Nutritionists say that breakfast is the most important meal in the day so what do you eat for breakfast?

MICHELLE WESTGEEST: Yes I try to variate… Usually it’s some yoghurt with grains and fruit, or oats in boiled water with banana slices. Some tea, coffee and I can’t resist the smell of the bakery in the morning! So a nice warm baguette ;)

D management

x

TRAVELING

x

PONY RYDER: How do you take care of yourself with all the traveling you do? What do you take with you?
MICHELLE WESTGEEST: My Ipod, 3 phones! Concealer, antibacterial stuff, cream, lip balm, sunglasses, comb, chewing gum lots of chewing gum :p. And extra vitamin C when traveling by plane.

PONY RYDER: Three phones Michelle?!?
MICHELLE WESTGEEST: 2 blackberry’s and one crappy French phone (the 3rd one already, ‘cause they all broke!) with a different ring tone for everyone to not get confused!

PONY RYDER: Chewing lots of chewing gums? So you must have developed taste for them! What’s your favorite taste?
MICHELLE WESTGEEST: My bad addiction!! Hmm.. every time I’m into a different taste actually. But the vanilla/ mint from ‘Splash’ is goooood!

THE MODEL INTERVIEW

NEXT show card
The Interview

PONY RYDER: Kelsey, Hi!
KELSEY VAN MOOK:
Hello!

PONY RYDER: Kelsey, when did you start modeling?
KELSEY VAN MOOK: I was scouted when I was 14. One day after school I was at the mall with my friend sitting on a bench, and a scout who's name is Corey, came and asked me if I'd thought of modeling, he gave me his card I gave it to my mom. And then this January I moved to New York to start full time.

PONY RYDER: Van Mook doesn't sound Canadian. What is your ethnic origin?
KELSEY VAN MOOK:
Van Mook is dutch. My grandfather was from Holland.. I am Dutch, English, French, and Icelandic. Quite a mix :)
Yves Saint Laurent SS10 via TFS(SirSunday)

PONY RYDER: What's the best compliment you've received?

KELSEY VAN MOOK:
I like all compliments, I'm not sure what the best one has been. I think just being told your beautiful by someone, or people loving your work are the best compliments.
modelwire via TFS (Amelia)

PONY RYDER: Have there been any disappointments so far?

KELSEY VAN MOOK:
Yes of course. Theres always options that you get and you really want them, and when you don’t it sucks. At the beginning I would get really upset, but now I've learned to just be patient., and just be happy about the bookings and shows that you DO get

ericguillemain.com via TFS (fadedcolours)

PONY RYDER: You opened the Givenchy show last season (F/W 09/10)! Many established model names where there and you got the opportunity to open it. Any thoughts…?

KELSEY VAN MOOK:
It was soooo amazing, I couldn't believe that I was the first one in the line..it was an honor to even be in the show, so opening it really meant so much to me.

Givenchy S/S 10 Paris via TFS (Nils)

PONY RYDER: When did you find out that you would be opening the show?

KELSEY VAN MOOK:
I was sitting in the hotel room with my mom, and my agency called me and told me the news!!! Me and my mom were freaking out. I never expected it at all so I was really shocked, I couldn't believe it! At first I was very excited..which shortly turned into very nervous haha.
Givenchy SS 10 via TFS(SirSunday)

PONY RYDER: Did you get any advice from established girls?

KELSEY VAN MOOK:
The advice people gave me was- “you know how to walk, don't worry it will be fine! You've done a few shows before.” I was like yeah but not Givenchy, ahhhhhh. But it all turned out well in the end, thank God!
Yen Mag #40 Australia via TFS (Amelia)

PONY RYDER: Victoria's Secret model Adriana Lima was also there. What is she like in person?

KELSEY VAN MOOK:
Yes!! She is so beautiful, one of my favorite models. I remember I was sitting waiting for my fitting a few days before the show and she just came walking up the stairs and sat down to wait for her fitting. I was like oh my god that's Adriana Lima!!!!!!! I would imagine it would only be the best of the best doing her hair and make up!

PONY RYDER: You also walked for Australian Fashion Week! Did you discover some designer/brand that you like and hadn't heard of before?

KELSEY VAN MOOK:
I found out about many new designers there. I really loved Romance was born, and the show was crazy and amazing. The clothes were sooo cool! I also loved Ellery
Burberry Prorsum S/S 10 London via TFS(CharlottefromCA)

PONY RYDER: From all the shows you did, who do you think had the most wearable collection, or was the most similar to your personal style.

KELSEY VAN MOOK:
Thats too hard to say, I would gladly take home all the clothes from all the shows I've done :)

STYLE TIPS

PONY RYDER: What's your style?

KELSEY VAN MOOK:
My style is to look good!! Hahaha… I really love shoes…I have some crazy ones, some thigh high fringed boots, my pink Doc Martens. You can never have to many pairs of shoes, right? Items that I'm loving at the moment are my blue Ray Bans, and a white sequin blazer I just got.
D&G SS/10 Milan via TFs(Lanvinray)

PONY RYDER: Who is your style icon?
KELSEY VAN MOOK:
I don’t think theres one person in particular, I’m always surrounded by fashion and people with the most amazing style so I learn a lot just from the people I’m around everyday
PONY RYDER: Where do you shop for your clothes?
KELSEY VAN MOOK:
Top shop, Zara, vintage stores, Urban Outfitters, Diesel, Miss Sixty,American Apparel and a lot of other random stores. I love to shop.

THE BODY TALK

PONY RYDER: When you first started modeling, did you have perfect measurements or did you have to work on it?

KELSEY VAN MOOK: When I was first scouted at 14, yes. I've always been thin naturally, but as I hit about 16 things started to change! I couldn't eat all the junk food and McDonalds and cream cheese bagels anymore haha. I mean I was still thin, but I had to work on it a little more.

PONY RYDER: How do you stay in shape?

KELSEY VAN MOOK:
Try to have a good healthy diet, drink a lot of water. I get a lot of exercise just from running around to castings. And I do hot yoga, it's hard and sweaty but a very good workout!
nextmodels.ca

FOOD AND DIET

PONY RYDER: Do you have any food plan that you follow?
KELSEY VAN MOOK:
Not really, I just think it's important to never skip breakfast... drink lots of water. I don't really have a food plan

PONY RYDER: What is your favorite brand of chocolate? KELSEY VAN MOOK: Hersheys, it's the best !

PONY RYDER: What do you eat for breakfast?
KELSEY VAN MOOK:
Yogurt, smoothies, Cheerios!
via TFS

BEAUTY TALK

PONY RYDER: What cleanser do you use for your face? KELSEY VAN MOOK: Neutrogena

PONY RYDER: What is your favorite moisturizer?
KELSEY VAN MOOK:
Neo Strata

PONY RYDER: Do you have a home made beauty recipe?
KELSEY VAN MOOK:
No..I just stick to the stuff I buy in the stores. I've read some home made beauty recipes, some really weird ones too. The weirdest one I've read is the Miracle Whip Exfoliator...hahaha

PONY RYDER: You have gorgeous hair! You just have to tell us, how do you mantain it, as well what shampoos do you prefer?

KELSEY VAN MOOK:
Thank you… Well my hair already goes through a lot from other people for work, so I always just leave my hair natural, I never straighten or curl it or anything. And I use Bed Head shampoo, it's good!

PONY RYDER: What have you learned from all the make up artists you worked with?
KELSEY VAN MOOK: Same as I said before, to always have your face moisturized. Also..wear sun screen on your face!!

Anna de Rijk is with DNA (NY) & Viva (Paris) & Paparazzi (Netherlands)

the Interview

PONY RYDER: Anna, you won a modeling contest on a Dutch television station. What show was it?

ANNA DE RIJK: It was a co-operation between a celebrity magazine, TMF (Dutch music channel), L'Oreal and Paparazzi (my mother agency).

PONY RYDER: Has that affected your career?

ANNA DE RIJK: It was good to get a bit of a start in Holland, but it didn't mean anything internationally. Also I was still in school back then and just wanted to finish first.

Burberry Prorsum SS10 via TFS by John Black

PONY RYDER: You reached stardom this year! What lead you to your success, was there a specific point in your career that made all the difference?

ANNA DE RIJK: Haha yes, this year everything has been different. It started with shows in London. Russel Marsh scouted me for a lot of his shows. I think he's really to blame for it all. Because doing well in London I also did good in the cities after and of course doing Prada and Miu Miu was a big boost.

viva site via TFS by castingcrowns

PONY RYDER: What do you think that the new girls have to be aware of?
ANNA DE RIJK: Well, I think they should maybe make sure they don't get walked over. To listen to yourself and know what is enough. You have to stand strong.

PONY RYDER:A cool personality is just as important as good looks in this business, if not more. Has your personality changed since you started?

ANNA DE RIJK: haha I hope not.. Would be strange to have a different personality all of a sudden. I do think I’ve changed but more in the sense of growing up and knowing who I am.

Steven Meisel for Prada

PRADA AD CAMPAIGN

PONY RYDER: Can you tell us about the day that you found out that you got the Prada campaign? Who told you the news?

ANNA DE RIJK: I think it was my Dutch booker from my mother agency. I was just having lunch at Wholefoods. I didn't scream or anything. But I was really happy. I had sort of a inner explosion haha

PONY RYDER: How do you get along with other girls from the campaign? Did you meet all of them on the day of the shoot, or have you met them before?

Steven Meisel for Prada

PONY RYDER: Those boots that you are wearing on the Prada ad are excellent! Would you wear them yourself?

ANNA DE RIJK: Yes, Yes!! I like them so much! I love rain boots and these are also very cool and beautiful, I would wear them a lot..

HAIR & GOODIES

PONY RYDER: What was the best goodie bag present that you got?

ANNA DE RIJK: It was the one with all the hair products from Leonore Greyl. (got it from Giambattista Valli) my hair was about to die but that goodie bag saved me (or just my hair)

READY TO WEAR

PONY RYDER: When is the stress bigger, when you are doing couture or ready to wear?

ANNA DE RIJK: Ready to wear! Because there are much more shows! So many castings… So many fashion weeks. What really makes it stressful is when I can't have a break. Because couture was not so busy for me I had loads of breaks.

Backstage @RichardChai SS10 via TFS by bones

CASTINGS

PONY RYDER: Are castings for couture different than castings for ready to wear?

ANNA DE RIJK: Haha, yes, well.. I guess it's very important you are dressed a bit chic and wear high heels and everything.. Only, I had a bit of a problem.. I came straight from a job in London and because I was supposed to go home to Amsterdam in between, I didn't have any casting clothes on me. Just one outfit..

My booker called me „the English country girl“.. It was a brownish flower dress with flat green laced boots. Not exactly a couture casting outfit. It didn't matter much in the end. I'm very happy with the shows I did.

mikas via TFS by meeks

PONY RYDER: Do you always have a pair of high heels with you? Which shoes are your favorite „casting shoes“?

ANNA DE RIJK: I don't really like high heels so much, so favorite casting shoes sounds a bit too loving maybe. There is a pair of Jaeger Boots, which I got last showseason. I wear those a lot to castings. And I'm planning on buying a pair of heels I actually love soon. For some positive energy during fashion week...

PONY RYDER: When you have castings all day, do you manage to eat at all?

ANNA DE RIJK: Yes, always. If there is no time I just run into a supermarket and get supplies to eat in the car. I love nuts and dried fruit as an easy snack.

Jimmy Backius for fashionrouge.com

COUTURE

PONY RYDER: What was your favorite couture show?
ANNA DE RIJK: Chanel. It was my first and it was very beautiful. It was a bit like „ah yes, this is what I would think a show would be like without ever doing one“. Very glamorous, super beautiful clothes and care to the whole show.

PONY RYDER: Did you take a sneak peek on who was sitting in the front row? Who did you see?
ANNA DE RIJK: No one I knew. It's probably better...

Givenchy S/S 10 Paris via TFS by NILS

PARIS

PONY RYDER: What do you like about fashion week and couture shows in Paris? Is it different from other fashion capitals?

ANNA DE RIJK: The fashion brands in Paris are so ancient, they are really the big fashion houses. And there was fashion.. So Paris has a bit of back-in-time mood to me. The whole city, it's culture, the Parisians and the way they dress, it is also very classic and conservative.

PONY RYDER: Did you discover any good places to eat in Paris?
ANNA DE RIJK: I eat a lot at Livingstone in Rue Saint Honore. It's Thai food, but very very good Thai food. I really don't like French cuisine. I find it boring and greasy.

PONY RYDER: The Best Café In Paris?
ANNA DE RIJK: Café Holland

Allure Spa 2009 ph. Regan Cameron via TFS

BODY & SHAPE

PONY RYDER: How do you stay in shape?

ANNA DE RIJK: Walking, eating healthy, enjoying life, doing things that make me happy. And.. a bit of bikram yoga.

PONY RYDER: Did you always have a perfect body, or did you have to work for it?

ANNA DE RIJK: What is the perfect body... Not sure whether me or anyone has that. I've always been slim but have to work more for it now then when I was 16..

PONY RYDER: What products do you use for nourishing your body?
ANNA DE RIJK: Bodylotion from Nivea

Jimmy Backius for fashionrouge.com

TASTE & FOOD

PONY RYDER: What do you eat for breakfast?
ANNA DE RIJK: I almost always have fruit and then the next thing changes. Sometimes oatmeal or granola or omelet and toast.

PONY RYDER: Which brand of cereals is your favorite?
ANNA DE RIJK: No favorite brands. Especially in New York. There’s absurd loads of choice so I try all of them.

PONY RYDER: Do you ever stop at Fast Food restaurants?
ANNA DE RIJK: Chipotle! It’s Mexican fastfood in New York. Very good...

Vogue Hellas via TFS by Mr-Dale

FACE & BEAUTY

PONY RYDER: How do you maintain yours skin?
ANNA DE RIJK: I clean every morning and evening and take masks (from Lush) sometimes.

ANNA DE RIJK: Kiehls, ultra facial moisturizer
